Everyone came back to London.

And then scattered — into a hundred firms and a dozen boroughs, into diaries that never quite line up. The people you'd once have seen every day now take three weeks and four reschedules, and "we must catch up" becomes the message nobody sends. What passes for networking happens under strip lighting, with a lanyard and a warm glass of white.

Palatine is the fix, and the fix is a table. Every few weeks we sit nine or so recent Durham graduates down to supper — a private dining room somewhere worth being, from fine dining to the newest openings — drawn from across industries and matched rather than thrown together. Each evening runs to a theme, so there's always a reason you're in the room; and because the table is mixed, so is what you take from it — an introduction that turns into work, a piece of industry gossip that never reaches LinkedIn, an idea you leave fully intending to steal.
